One Appointment — Complete Information — Clear Path Forward

The Comprehensive
Prostate Evaluation

Most BPH patients see two or three doctors before anyone knows what's actually happening with their prostate. Dr. Childs has designed a different kind of appointment — one 60-minute visit that combines consultation, ultrasound, bladder exam, and urine flow testing, so you leave with a complete picture and a clear plan.

No coming back in three weeks for results. No waiting for a referral to imaging. Everything — in one visit.

How the Visit Works

Your 60-Minute Evaluation, Step by Step

1
0–15 min
Consultation
Dr. Childs reviews your symptoms, medical history, medications, and any prior tests. He explains what the evaluation involves and answers your questions before anything begins.
2
15–30 min
Diagnostics
Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), cystoscopy, and urocuff flow testing are performed in sequence. Each takes only a few minutes. Most patients tolerate them comfortably with minimal discomfort.
3
30–45 min
Results Review
Dr. Childs reviews the findings with you immediately — prostate size, anatomy, bladder function, and flow rate — and explains what they mean for your symptoms and treatment options.
4
45–60 min
Shared Decision-Making
With a complete picture in hand, you and Dr. Childs discuss all relevant treatment options — medical management, MIST procedures, HoLEP, or watchful waiting — and make a plan together.

The Diagnostic Tests

Three Complementary Tests — One Complete Picture

Each of the three diagnostic tests provides a different dimension of information. Together, they give Dr. Childs everything needed to make a precise, individualized treatment recommendation in a single visit.

Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS)
CPT 76872
A small ultrasound probe measures the exact size and anatomy of the prostate. This tells Dr. Childs how large the gland is, whether it has an obstructing median lobe, and which treatment options are most appropriate for your anatomy. Prostate size is critical to selecting between HoLEP, TURP, UroLift, Rezūm, and other options — a "one size fits all" recommendation without imaging is simply not good medicine.
✓ Determines prostate volume and anatomy — essential for procedure selection
Cystoscopy
CPT 52000
A thin, flexible scope is passed through the urethra to directly visualize the bladder and urethra. This allows Dr. Childs to see whether obstruction is present, evaluate the bladder neck and prostate lobes, rule out other causes of urinary symptoms (bladder stones, tumors, strictures), and confirm that surgery is both necessary and appropriate. Modern flexible cystoscopes are well-tolerated and take only 2–3 minutes.
✓ Direct visualization — rules out other conditions and confirms obstruction
Uroflowmetry & Voiding Pressure (Urocuff)
CPT 51728-52 & 51741
The Urocuff is a non-invasive test that uses an external penile cuff — similar to a blood pressure cuff — to measure bladder voiding pressure while simultaneously recording urine flow rate. Unlike traditional urodynamics, no catheter is required. This provides two complementary pieces of information: how forcefully the bladder contracts during voiding, and how fast urine actually flows. Together these measurements help confirm obstruction, quantify its severity, and establish a baseline to compare against after surgery. The test is billed as two components — the voiding pressure study (51728-52) and the complex uroflowmetry (51741).
✓ Non-invasive voiding pressure + flow measurement — confirms obstruction and guides treatment planning

Why This Matters

The Traditional Model Fails Patients

"The average BPH patient visits two or three providers across multiple appointments before anyone knows the size of their prostate or the severity of their obstruction. We can do better than that."
Eliminates the gap between first and second visit
The period between "consultation" and "results" is where patients are lost. Many men with BPH never return after the first visit — anxiety, inertia, and busy lives win. A same-day diagnosis eliminates that window.
Better decisions require better information
Recommending surgery without knowing prostate size, anatomy, and flow rate is like prescribing glasses without measuring your vision. The CPE gives Dr. Childs the data to make a truly individualized recommendation.
Respects your time
Men who come for a prostate evaluation are often 60–75 years old and value efficiency. "One visit, complete answer, clear plan" is exactly what that demographic wants — and deserves.
Rules out other conditions
Cystoscopy can detect bladder cancer, bladder stones, and strictures that would otherwise be missed. For men with blood in their urine or unusual symptoms, this is a critical safety check.

Insurance & Billing

Is This Covered?

Yes — performing multiple procedures on the same date of service is standard, legitimate practice in urology and is accepted by Medicare and most commercial insurance plans. Each procedure is billed under its own CPT code with its own indication. There is no "bundling" issue because these are distinct tests with distinct clinical purposes.

Before your appointment, Dr. Childs's team will verify your specific benefits and provide an estimate of any out-of-pocket costs. Most patients with Medicare or commercial insurance pay their standard specialist copay or coinsurance.

If you have questions about your specific plan, call our office at (801) 432-3022 and we will verify your coverage before you book.
